Glenross Plantation Bungalow |
Glenross is the sister property to the five-star Blue Waters beach hotel in Wadduwa, and has long been the holiday home of the Sri Lankan owners. This century-old plantation bungalow has been caringly refurbished maintaining its old architectural features including Georgian windows, gabled roofs, and stone walls. The interiors are tastefully decorated with Dutch period antiques and plush sofas.
Rooms
This two-storey bungalow has four suites – two on the ground floor and two upstairs. All suites are spacious and consist of a bedroom, reading room and ensuite bathroom with bathtub and h/w shower. Two of the rooms have a/c and all have ceiling fans. Rooms are furnished with king size beds, a writing desk, and reclining chairs.
Dining
The ground floor as well as the upper floor has spacious lounge areas. There are several dining options including within the privacy of your own room, in the main dining room, outside patio, poolside or the front garden overlooking the mountains. Sri Lankan and western cuisine is on offer here prepared with fresh meats, seafood and vegetables purchased daily.
Kani Lanka Resort |
Kani Lanka Resort and Spa is beautifully positioned at the end of a long spit of land that, at its point, is where the important Kalu Ganga meets the expansive Indian Ocean a few kilometres south of Kalutara.
After checking in and receiving a welcome chilled towel and refreshing fruit drink, you are shown to your room. Leaving the reception to walk through the lobby and past the Kani Lounge, you learn that this part is designed by the late Sri Lankan master architect, Geoffrey Bawa, while a Swiss furniture maker, Rico Tarawella, designed the bedroom wings when this was constructed as the Sinbad Hotel, as it was previously known.
From this vantage point by the lagoon you can gaze upon the three temples of faith across the water in Kalutara: the Buddhist temple, the Catholic church, and the Muslim mosque.
It has a luxury Spa, which contains a deep jacuzzi and four serene and airy treatment rooms, and The Water Sports Centre. All sorts of activities are offered on the lagoon including trips down the historic Kalu Ganga, which used to be an important trade route. Tours are offered to Kalutara and surrounding attractions while on site you can play tennis, volleyball or visit the fitness centre.
Rooms
Much improved, the hotel is made up of 99 standard and superior rooms as well as six suites that are luxurious, spacious and have stunning views of both the sea and lagoon. Amenities include Satellite TV, DVD player, fridge, hot and cold water and you are welcomed with a huge fruit platter.
Dining
Meals are generally served in the Saffron Restaurant, which is unusual because of its futuristic tables and chairs made from teakwood imported from Indonesia, from where much of the furniture throughout the hotel comes. For lunch and dinner, there is either a buffet or a set menu that combines a variety of fare and at least four courses. The menu will contain something for everyone, and the presentation of the food is beautiful. Incidentally, there are also regular beach barbeques.
An a la carte menu is available, too, with snacks such as sandwiches to full speciality meals such as lobster and jumbo prawns. In fact if you wish to celebrate a special occasion inform the reception, who will position your table on the beach or even on the floating restaurant on the lagoon. The emphasis here really is on luxury, intimacy and romance, and the staff is on hand to make your stay a memorable one.
