Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions |
Ayurveda – literally “the science of life” – is a traditional system of medicine that aims to achieve balance of the body, mind and soul through the use of indigenous ingredients and special therapies.Almost any health problem can be addressed, though those who wish to maintain holistic good health need not have a particular ailment. The Ayurveda Pavilions has recently won recognition as one of the best spas in the World Travel Awards, so her vision has become a reality.
Guests are seen by qualified doctors who examine them and determine which treatments should be prescribed according to individual aspects of body, mind and soul. The process is totally personalized and truly holistic. Because treatment is carried out within the guest’s pavilion, you can relax afterwards and allow the medicinal oils to soak into your skin without the need to cover up.
The holistic approach results in a vast array of treatments. Most can be taken in the privacy of the guest’s pavilion – but some, such as the sauna, need to be taken in the hotel’s treatment centre, which is modelled on a traditional Ayurvedic doctor’s surgery. Here you find the usual array of jars and bottles with miscellaneous contents ready to be pummeled, crushed, boiled or chopped according to the treatment.
Rooms
You are then taken to your apartment, which consists of an open-air treatment area, a grassy clearing and a bungalow. Throughout the hotel, space is emphasized so that guests never feel hemmed in despite the individual nature of the pavilions. As if this wasn’t luxurious enough, you can also soak up Ayurvedic goodness, in the form of specially prepared bath concoctions! The rooms have high ceilings and beautiful natural furniture that makes you feel comfortable. TV and music systems are provided - but only relaxing music so as to encourage the balance of the mind and soul.
Dining
At the restaurant, sunlight is seen slanting through the rafters of the roof, providing a stunning natural effect. The menu draws on the country’s gastronomical heritage and the staff explains each dish to patrons so they know what they are eating and how it will benefit them. Not only is this informative, for it gives the diners the feeling they are eating carefully prepared, home-cooked food. At the end of your stay, there is a final consultation with the doctor, who charts your progress and makes recommendations. In this way the benefits of your holiday can be extended after you have left the cocoon of the Ayurveda Pavilions.

Golden Star Beach |
The Palace Hotel |
The Palace Hotel is a small luxury hotel in Negombo. Friendly personalized service and a warm welcome will make your stay more than comfortable. The panoramic view is one of the main high lights of the hotel. Luxury spacious Air-conditioned rooms facilitated with telephone, Internet and cable tv are few of the facilities available
Jetwing Beach |
The Beach gained the accolade of being the first and only five-star hotel in Negombo, ensuring up-market tourists have a home in the beach resort town closest to the international airport.
Ii is planned specifically to highlight contemporary Sri Lankan style. The architect worked carefully with the existing structure to highlight aspects typical of the renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa, who designed the building. Open spaces, clean lines and above all, an emphasis on minimalism, ensures the eye is drawn to the gorgeous natural surroundings rather than the building itself. As well as the five-star quality food and lodgings, the hotel boasts a well-appointed Spa offering holistic treatments that aim to take guests to a higher level of relaxation.
Dining
If ‘wellness’ includes food, then the fine dining restaurant called Black Coral must be the number one treatment. The quality and presentation of the food is of such a standard that it rivals any of the famous eateries in Colombo. Not only is the food superb, but the ambience is relaxed and intimate and the décor stylish in an understated manner. Candles on every table reflects warmly through the sparkling outsized wine glasses, and the black crockery contrasts perfectly with the deep red napkins. The bar faces a striking image - a water feature with trees rising from the centre of a pool lined with blue tiles, lighting up dramatically at night for drinkers to gaze at.
It is not only the fine dining that is outstanding though: the breakfast buffet is a real treat, with items such as smoked salmon, an array of European cheeses and delicious fresh soursop juice among others. Hot food is prepared freshly in the kitchen to order rather than standing to stew in the buffet area unlike at the majority of hotel buffets, and the spreads of pastries, fruits and cereals are impressive for their range and freshness.
Rooms
The rooms are unique in that instead of a wall separating the bedroom from bathroom, here there were windows. This avoids the claustrophobic feeling of many tiny hotel bathrooms and allows the guest to lie in the immense bath with a view of palms and distant boats on the horizon. Inside, the bedroom is furnished completely with solid dark wooden items, in contrast to the plain white walls. The floor features smooth, cooling tiles and the windows are covered by simple black-out blinds to ensure guest can lie in for as long as they want, no matter how bright the sunshine reflecting off the white sands outside.

Browns Beach |
With a beach only 20 minutes from the international airport, Brown’s Beach Hotel, Negombo is the most convenient destination to fit into any tour of the island. In fact, it is the relaxed atmosphere of the Brown’s Beach that surprised me. While there are over 100 rooms boasting air conditioning and hot water, a large pool and a site that sprawls for almost a kilometre down the beach, it has managed to retain the feel of a typically Sri Lankan beach hotel. This is due not only to the laid-back staff, but also to the open spaces dotted with sprinklers lazily keeping the greenery fresh.
On arrival, the perfect way to unwind and experience beach hospitality, but with the continued luxury of air conditioning and hot water, is to make Browns Beach your first stop. Not only are there sporting activities, the beach bar, a pub, a nightclub, ayurvedic treatments, and both buffet and a la carte restaurants, but also the opportunity to take to the seas aboard a traditional fishing boat that stands on the hotel’s wide beach.
The beach bar is huge and built on concrete, but at the same time has traditional palm frond roofing and that warm, lazy feeling you can only get at the beach. As night falls, the long corridor that stretches down beside the main building lights up dramatically to lead guests to the restaurants, pub, bar and nightclub. The feeling in the beach bar is intimate and informal, with the sea breeze blowing freely through the open sides, creating natural air-conditioning for those enjoying a cocktail in the night air.
