Hotels in Nuwera Eliya - CheckintoSriLanka Book Hotels
Jetwing St.Andrews |
There are scores of hotels where the facilities and service are beyond criticism. However, what many hotels lose when they strive for up-market clientele and international accolade is the warmth that comes from staff who really think about their guests’ needs and a management that invests in personal touches. St Andrew’s Hotel in Nuwara Eliya is one such establishment that retains both high standards and a feeling of genuine welcome.
The moment you catch a peek of the majestic entrance corridor you know you are about to be transported to a Nuwara Eliya of the past. Passing through the gates, a riot of colours in the form of countless varieties of cool weather flowers suddenly envelops you, reminiscent of Europe on a summer’s day. The entrance corridor stretches upwards for what might seem like a mile to the weary traveller, but any effort is well worth it when you reach its peak – the old house itself.
Activities at the hotel ranges from golfing at the course just over the road, an array of nature walks to experience the distinct ecosystem of the area, trips to view hill country waterfalls, birding opportunities and pony riding.
Rooms
A room would be everything one could have expected of colonial quarters. A dressing table for the lady, matching wardrobe to keep the latest fashion from Europe pristine, and a comfortable adjoining sitting room with welcoming armchairs to sink into after a long walk in the bracing air. Most attractive to one now accustomed to stifling humidity, though, was the wrought iron four poster bed and its temptingly thick blankets, that would come in very handy during the chilly night ahead. Being 1,884 metres above sea level, temperatures generally range from 10 to 25 degrees centigrade between day and night – pleasant for a European but icy for a Colombo resident!
Dining
The restaurant prides itself on its attentive service, on its garden fresh ingredients, and on limiting the buffet service to breakfast. The freshness of the vegetables highlighted by being perfectly cooked, and presentation that was both striking and classy. The term fine dining is certainly not wasted on such creations. The guests often comment that they value the personal service of fine dining over the atmosphere of a buffet, and so the hotel continues to serve its lunch and evening meals individually.
The large room itself is dimly lit, to provide intimacy and privacy for diners and has music from a past era playing as a gentle reminder of days gone by. Down a few steps is the spotless kitchen itself, where you can see your food being prepared even from your table. To the left of the kitchen is the walk in wine cellar with 48 varieties arranged according to their country of origin.

Blessed with salubrious climate, breathtaking valleys and meadows, mountains and greenery that’s soothing on the eye, it belies the fact that Nuwaraeliya is hardly 180 kms from the hot and humid Colombo, the capital of Sri lanka.
