Tucked away on a hillside carpeted with mature palms, overlooking the glorious 800m crescent-shaped sandy bay known as Silent Beach, is Amanwella. With such an isolated position, Amanwella, close to the small fishing town of Tangalle in the deep south of the island, proves that tropical hideaways do exist in Sri Lanka.
 
The public buildings are situated at the south of the resort, atop a rocky headland overlooking the ocean. The gardens at Amanwella are immaculate though most of the land is left to grow wild. Catamarans line the beach providing a colourful burst of character so that the setting remains firmly Sri Lankan. As an added advantage to both fishermen and resort, much of Amanwella’s seafood and fish is chosen from this most local of catches! A short stroll past all of the suites to the centre of the sandy bay is the beach club, an informal alternate venue for light lunches and snacks.

The 30 ultra-contemporary suites at Amanwella are a five-minute walk from the main public areas allowing for both privacy and seclusion. They offer everything you could possibly want, including 24-hour room service, in-room spa treatment, in-room dining and a private pool so that you needn’t step outside. The plunge pool welcomes you first as you descend into your suite. It is situated along one side of the room and beside a small walled-in courtyard. Inside the airy rooms are a king-sized bed, writing desk, armchair and daybed covered with soft lightly shaded linen and cushions atop sandy coloured terrazzo floors. A credenza features a well-stocked mini-bar as well as an enormous bowl of fruit for the guests’ convenience.
